Our animal laws are good for pets, people and property. Please take a moment to learn about some important Concordia laws pertaining to our pets.
IT'S RAINING CATS AND DOGS
Spaying and neuturing your pet can eventually save the lives of thousands of unaltered pets. Please be a part of the solution for homeless animals. For more information on spaying and neutering, contact you veterinarian.
HUSH PUPPY
Nuisance laws are designed to curb unreasonable barking and noise disturbances. City of Concordia pet owners are expected to keep barking under control. Proper training of pets makes for better neighborhood relations.
LICENSES
Owners are required to license all dogs over the age of at least 6 months. The yearly license fee shall be $5.00 for each male dog and spayed female dog and $8.00 for each un-spayed female dog. All dogs belonging to the same household shall be registered in the name of the head of household. If such household contains more than four dogs, the city clerk shall collect a license fee of $10.00 for each additional dog in excess of four dogs. All animals must be vaccinated for rabies prior to obtaining a license. All dog licenses shall be issued for one year beginning with March 1st.
RECREATION WITH ROVER
Three important facts to follow when taking a dog to a city park are:
- Training and socializing teaches appropiate behavior.
- Never play aggressive games with dogs.
- Keep your dog's aggression in check by not allowing threatening behavior, which includes lunging, jumping, snarling and growling. (an excessive dominate behavior)
The owners of all dogs six months or older, within the city limits, are required to have a vaccination against rabies. The owner shall display the current rabies immmunization tag at all times on a collar, harness, or leash attached to the dog. All animal bites must be reported to Animal Control immediately. State Law requires a 10 day quarantine at a Veterinary clinic, animal shelter or at home. Restrictions do apply. Please call 785-243-3131 to report.
THE HAPPY CAMPER
When pets are kept outside, please consider their needs with regards to the seasons. Proper housing, sanitation and tangle free enviroment are required. Be aware of shade sources in the summer and windbreaks in the winter. Fresh food and water must be provided daily! Please leave your pets at home when hazardous weather is present.
LOVE 'EM & LEASH 'EM
All pets, including cats, must be kept on their own property unless they are being exercised on a leash or engaging in actively controlled obediance training. (Yes, cats can be leash trained!) Dogs, cats and other animals can also be penned or loose on their own property in compliance with the city code. It is dangerous to let pets roam unsupervised.
DON'T BE IN THE DOGHOUSE
Owners found to repeatedly violate leash laws may be issued citations. The first offense is $200.00. A $80.00 court fee will also be assessed. Roaming animals taken into custody by Animal Control may be reclaimed by their owner within the five day reclaim period and payment of the impounding fees. Citations may also include violations for not having your dog properly registered for the City of Concordia or not picking up after your pet makes a deposit on public or private grounds.
FORGET ME NOT!
Laws regarding the humane treatment of animals within the city limits are also enforced. It is your responsibility to establish and maintain a veterinary program for your pet.
A BONE TO PICK
Animal problems begin and end with their owners. If you need assistance mediating a problem in your neighborhood, please call the Police Department at 785-243-3131 before the situation becomes unbearable or unsafe.
